Most questions about Finnish precious-metal marks can be answered by examining the complete row of marks and comparing each mark with the information on this site.

Begin with the mark that is easiest to recognise, then use it to investigate the others. A single worn or indistinct mark can be misleading, but the complete row will usually help narrow down the maker, locality and period.

  • The complete row of marks Take a photograph showing all adjacent marks together and in their correct order.
  • A sharp close-up Photograph the marks directly from above in good light. Avoid flash reflections and blurred digital enlargement.
  • The complete object Include a photograph of the entire object so that its purpose, shape and style can be seen.
  • Details of the object Tell us its dimensions, presumed material, any letters and numbers visible in the marks, and any other known background information.

Tip: attach the original photograph files—not screenshots of photographs displayed on your phone. Send the images at their original or full size, selecting that option if your email app asks which size to use. A screenshot or an image reduced by an email or messaging app may lose the details needed to identify a mark.
